      You asked:

Why do we have pubic hair?

      Gill Says:

Pubic hair protects the sexual organs, catches dirt, and keeps clothes and things from direct contact with the sensitive skin in this area. It also acts as an excellent air vent that helps your body keep the pH balance right in your vagina.

      You asked:

I started my periods in junior school and was an early developer. But I haven’t grown since and I’m really short (160 cm). Do you stop growing when your periods start?

      Gill Says:

Yes, you pretty much stop growing once your periods start. You’ll usually grow just a few more centimetres, but not much more than that.

      You asked:
I’m a 14 year old girl who’s quite some way into puberty.  My periods have started, I have reasonably well-developed breasts, and I have pubic hair. But I don’t have any hair under my arms yet. Does this mean that there’s something wrong with me?

      Gill Says:

No, there’s probably nothing wrong with you. It’s just proof of how differently we all develop. Some people get hair under their arms first and the rest follows on. Others might get virtually no hair at all. And that’s perhaps as well, given that most people shave it off anyway.

      You asked:

Is it dangerous to shave your pubic hair?

      Gill Says:

No, it’s not dangerous to shave your pubic hair. Just be careful not to cut yourself, and make sure that you use a clean razor that’s sharp enough. It’s a good idea to use a mirror so that you can see what you’re doing. The skin around your sexual organs is very sensitive and if you damage the follicles by using a blunt razor, you can get inflamed follicles, which is not much fun! You should also remember, if you want to shave your pubic hair, that it’s there to protect the area and to make sure that the air can get at it. If you remove the hair, you reduce this possibility. Tight clothes, synthetic cloths, thongs, and pantyliners can further reduce the inflow of air and lead to itching and yeast infections. So by all means shave, but don’t forget to let your genital area breathe occasionally!
