Whether you’re just starting your period journey or have braved countless clotty, crampy days, finding the right pad for you is key to feeling protected and confident throughout your flow.

From different shapes and sizes to varying absorbency levels, we're here to help you navigate the options and take the guesswork out of pad shopping. Like whether to go for wings, or how to pick the right pad for your specific flow — because some days, you need that extra absorbency to keep your V-Zone (that's your vagina, vulva, and the V-shaped front of your body) feeling protected and snug.

Regardless of whether your flow is just a drizzle or more of a heavy downpour, you can find a pad that works for you. So, let's dive in, and by the end, you’ll be ready to tackle anything.

What is a period pad and how does it work?

Period pads, also known as sanitary towels, are absorbent pieces of material designed to catch and absorb menstrual blood. From ultra towels to maxi towels, their soft, comfortable surface sits directly against the skin of your vulva, while the inner absorbent layers trap the liquid and keep your flow in place.

They are typically lined with a sticky strip on the back, which sticks to your underwear and keeps the pad in place. Some pads also come with wings — those extra sticky flaps that fold around the sides of your underwear gusset (the bit between your legs) to offer extra security and help prevent shifting or leakage. Pads can come in various sizes, such as regular or long, so you can choose what works best for you. There are even special pads designed for nighttime use.

Pads are used externally, so there's no need to insert anything into your body. Simply pop one in your underwear for full comfort and coverage, so that you can go about your day with confidence. Just be sure to change it every 4 hours or as needed, and you’re all set!

Choosing the best absorbency type

Our flows can be unpredictable at times, from light days to heavy flows. So, choosing a pad with the right absorbency level can make all the difference to your comfort, keeping you feeling dry, fresh, and worry-free. A pad that matches your flow offers better protection and boosts your confidence, so you can go about your day without worrying about leakages or discomfort.

You can tell what absorbency a pad is by checking on the packaging — look for words like "absorbency" or "flow" along with light, regular, heavy. You can use the V-Flow indicator on our packaging to find your ideal towel. The higher the level of red in the V, the more absorbent the towel.

Heavy flow

A heavy period is your thickest flow, clots and all. You might experience highs and lows of abundant flow, with some gushes (like when you suddenly stand up after sitting down for a while, or sneeze). During these times, you might find yourself changing your pad more than usual, up to 6 times a day.

For those heavier flow days, having reliable protection is an absolute game-changer. The right pad can make all the difference, especially when you're on the move or settling in for a cosy night’s sleep. Longer pads or those with wings can help keep any accidents at bay, giving you the confidence to power through your day or night worry-free.

Bodyform Comfort & Security Maxi Towel with Wings are designed for maximum absorbency, making them ideal for heavy periods. These pads provide superior coverage, ensuring you stay protected and comfortable all day or night, regardless of what position you are in.

Need extra protection for nights when you have heavier flow? Explore our wide range of heavy-flow Ultra Night pads, including the Bodyform Goodnight Ultra X-Large Sanitary Pads with Wings, designed to provide ultimate comfort during your period nights. These overnight extra-large sanitary towels provide maximum protection in every sleeping position. The 3x Max-absorbent material zones at the front, middle, and back work fast to soak up blood and lock it in, keeping you up to 100% dry.

Regular flow

Moderate is your regular steady mid-period flow, with a few clots and occasional gushes. While experiencing a moderate flow, you might change your pad every 4 hours or so, or up to 3 times per day.

On moderate flow days, it’s all about striking the perfect balance between protection and comfort. You need enough coverage to take care of your period, but without any unnecessary feelings of bulkiness. That’s why choosing products designed for medium flow is key — they provide the right level of absorption while keeping you comfortable and confident.

Bodyform V-Protection Ultra Normal Sanitary Pads are designed specifically for these days, offering just the right amount of absorbency to lock in blood where it’s needed most. Whether you're running errands or at the office, these pads keep you feeling dry and confident all day long.

For a more cushioned experience, try the Bodyform Comfort & Security Maxi Towels — perfect for when you need that extra comfort for your V-Zone.

Light flow

So, what counts as light? Think about the stoppy-starty flow you might experience around the beginning or end of your period, and spontaneous spotting. A few drops here and there and no gushes. The times when you change your pad only once a day or could make do with just a liner.

On those lighter flow days, you might not need the full protection of a pad, but you still want to stay fresh and comfortable. Whether it’s at the start or end of your period, if you experience light spotting, or if you need something to take care of discharge, choosing a liner can provide the perfect balance.

Panty liners are great for when you need light coverage, allowing you to feel confident and dry as you go about your day. They’re especially handy for daily use, offering protection during those times when you need a little extra care. Wearing light absorbency period pants can also be a great option if you're looking for extra security during your lighter flow days. The best part is, they feel just like regular underwear!

Long vs. short period pads: how to choose the right length for your flow

Short or long, it's the eternal period pad debate! Choosing the right length is crucial - just like how you wouldn’t use a light pad on a heavy flow day.

Tailoring your pad length to match your flow ensures maximum comfort and protection. Some people prefer regular pads, as their shorter length offers a more discreet and lightweight feel, making them ideal for lighter flow days. Plus, shorter pads are easier to wear with your favourite smaller underwear styles, giving you the freedom to feel fresh and protected, whatever your knickers!

However, on days when your flow is heavier, opting for a pad with longer length might be a better option. Longer pads provide extra coverage, offering more protection so you can go about your day with confidence and peace of mind. For example. our Bodyform V-Protection Ultra Long+ Towels with Wings  wrap your V-Zone in cushiony joy and comfort, with a little extra length.

Period pads without wings vs. Sanitary towels with wings

To wing or not to wing, that is the period pad question. Some people prefer pads with wings (like our Bodyform V-Protection Ultra+ Deo Towels with Wings) as they can help to keep your pad in place, so there's no need to worry about shifting or bunching throughout the day. To put on a pad with wings, you stick the main bit to your underwear as normal, then peel the paper to reveal the stickiness on the wings, wrap these around the underneath of your underwear, then you're done!

On the other hand, some of us may prefer pads without wings because they’re super easy to put on and take off.  It's up to personal preference - it can help to try both and see which one you like best!

FAQs

Can you flush period pads down the toilet?

It's a no-no to flush period pads down the toilet. Doing so can clog up your pipes and lead to plumbing problems. Instead, simply throw away used pads in the bin. There might be one in the toilet, but if there isn't, simply wrap up your pad and throw it away when you can. You can use the wrapper of your next pad to wrap up the old one,  or some toilet paper can do the trick too.

Do pads make your period end faster?

Pads are great at what they do - absorbing your menstrual flow, not speeding up the finale of your period. Your body follows its own schedule no matter what kind of period product you're using. So, let your body do its thing, whether you're using a pad or not.

Are there any substances that cause skin irritation in period pads?

It's always a good idea to check the ingredients list and avoid harsh chemicals in any product you put near your V-Zone.
Some pads may contain fragrances, dyes, or other irritants that might cause discomfort, especially if you have sensitive skin. If your skin is easily irritated, look for hypoallergenic or unscented pads. Your skin deserves comfort too!

Light period not enough to fill a pad: what should I do?

If your pad isn't filling up as much as usual, don’t worry! Period fluctuations are normal and can be caused by hormones, stress, contraception or simply a lighter cycle. On those lighter days, a panty liner might be your best option. They’re perfect for when you just need a little coverage without the bulk of a full pad.

If you notice your flow is lighter than your normal or that you're experiencing other symptoms that concern you, you might want to make an appointment with your doctor. They'll be able to reassure you and investigate anything that could be affecting your flow.

So, there you have it! You’re now armed with all the know-how to choose the perfect type of pad for your unique flow and lifestyle. It's completely normal for your flow to vary throughout your cycle, so it's important to choose period products that suit your needs. Remember, the right choice is out there just waiting for you to discover it.

Finding your perfect match means more than just comfort — it’s about empowering yourself to tackle each day with confidence, knowing you’re protected. Don’t forget to listen to your body, trust your instincts, and most importantly, own your period!
